Arts Assessment Tools and Strategies
1) Rubrics - Rubrics are commonly used in all content areas, including the arts. They are designed as a set of guidelines that provide clear descriptions of learning expectations for students, and promote consistency in the evaluation of student work.
The National Core Arts website includes a variety of tools and strategies to help you align your teaching with nationally recognized, grade-appropriate standards and benchmarks for your students. The site also includes example rubrics that can be searched by discipline and grade level. To explore the site:
2) Self and Peer Assessment - Self- and peer-assessments engage students in thinking about how their work and the work of their fellow students stacks up against established criteria. Training students to participate in these types of assessments helps them take ownership of their own learning and to see a purpose in practice and revision.
The Arts Assessment for Learning website provides links to projects in every discipline and grade level. In addition to complete lesson plans and instructional videos, each project include self- and peer-assessments that you can use or modify for your students. To explore the site:
3) Written Responses - Written responses help students articulate what they have learned in their own words. This engages students in a meta-cognitive exercise that can deepen learning--when they have to explain their thinking, they’re more likely to retain and apply that knowledge.
The North Coast Arts Integration website includes some wonderful resources for planning integrated arts lessons and units, including lesson plans, videos, and other tools. Most include a “Writing Frame” or “Reflection Form” to allow students to demonstrate what they’ve learned in writing. To explore the integrated lessons:
4) Portfolios - Portfolios can be a valuable assessment tool in the arts classroom because they can include a range of student-developed products that can include work samples, reflective writing, and content knowledge. Because they provide a record of student work over time, they help both the student and teacher understand how the student has improved over the course of the year.
The Kennedy Center’s ARTSEDGE website includes a great article discussing the benefits of portfolio assessments in the arts classroom:
